Prélude pastorale, for piano 4-handsYear: 1888
Genre: Prelude / Fugue
Pr. Instrument: Piano 4-Hands
Emmanuel Chabrier's Prélude pastorale (1888) for orchestra is a bucolic paean to tranquillity which suffered neglect and abandonment following its premiere performance. Such neglect is unjust, for the work is fulsome and generous in its evocative powers. The seven-minute Prélude is also marked by a fine melodic and orchestrational sense, both hallmarks of Chabrier's mature music. The work progresses gently (the composer's marking is "Moderato assai—dolce sostenuto") though several changes of mood, ending peacefully.
