    Genre: Chorale

Bach's short simple chorale setting of the anonymous Lutheran hymn Dir, dir Jehova, will ich singen (To You, Jehovah I Will Sing) was published as part of the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook and has been dated at approximately 1725. The work sets the four-verse chorale in E major, with the soprano voice carrying the cheerful devotional melody supported by the continuo of harpsichord and cello. Bach's setting is in bar form, which opens with the first and second lines repeating as the third and fourth lines with the odd numbered lines end on half cadences and the even numbered lines end on perfect cadences and which closes with the fifth line modulating to the minor submediant and the sixth and final line returning via a perfect cadence to the tonic.
