Little is known about this isolated piece, which may originally have formed part of plans for a larger work. In the absence of an autograph, scholars have dated it from between 1789 and 1791, the year of Mozart's death. The Minuet was published by the Viennese house Mollo in 1801 with the inclusion of a Trio section in B Minor by the Abbé Maximilian Stadler, who assisted Mozart's widow Constanze in sorting and preparing his music for publication.
