Musicology:
This symphony was written in Salzburg in 1772, and is one of the finer symphonies of this period, possessing notably fine melodies throughout. It is also broader in conception, lasting a bit over twenty minutes. Mozart includes trumpets in his orchestras, and even arranges that one of the main tunes of the first movement are playable on even the non-valved instruments of the period. Mozart takes advantage of the presence of both horns and trumpets to write several fanfare exchanges between them. The slow movement is a serenade, which pizzicato notes in the bass hinting at the sound of the serenader's guitar.. The minuet movement is confident, with the middle section (or trio) being in a nocturnal mood. The last movement is in a jig tempo. -
