Scherzo in AbKey: Ab
Year: 1885
Genre: Other Keyboard
Pr. Instrument: Piano
Borodin's Scherzo in A flat major was the second of two works he wrote for the piano (the other was the Petite Suite). Composed in 1885 during Borodin's visit to Belgium to attend a performance of his not-yet-complete opera Prince Igor, the Scherzo is instantly recognizable as Borodin. The vivacious tone, the pounding rhythms, the sensual melodies, and the sparkling sonorities all mark it as a work by the composer of the Polovtsian Dances. Although at less than three minutes' playing time, Borodin's Scherzo is clearly a miniature and is both an impressive précis of its composer and an effective piece in its own right.
