Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré, for violin and pianoYear: 1922
Genre: Other Chamber
Pr. Instruments: Violin & Piano
Ravel's simple, affecting lullaby Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré was published in a special issue of the journal La Revue Musicale honoring the esteemed French composer in October 1922. The opening melody derives from the dedicatee's name (which Ravel "spells" musically as GABDBEE FAGDE) and is easily recognizable in subsequent appearances in both the violin and the piano.
The violin plays con sordino throughout the piece. The concluding parallel seconds call to mind "Jumbo's Lullaby" from Debussy's piano suite Children's Corner (1906-1908). Fauré was flattered by Ravel's hommage and wrote in a letter to the composer: "I am thinking of your growth, dear friend...and I am happier than you can imagine about the solid position which you occupy and which you have acquired so brilliantly and so rapidly. It is a source of joy and pride for your old professor...."
