    Pr. Instrument: Orchestra

Barber's final Essay was written in the summer of 1978 and first conducted

by Zubin Mehta in New York. Like his previous Essays, this is an abstract

piece of music of dramatic character. The language is openly tonal and

typically mature Barber. Slightly longer than the other two, it begins with

one minute of solo percussion. There is not an easily perceptible structure

like in the previous Essays. There are two clearly discernible themes, the

main one being a warm and open melody in major mode. They combine

to produce a series of dramatic episodes of varying intensity ending in an

intense climax.
