The piece is scored for two sets of church bells or chimes, and four trombones and trumpets, each playing in unison. Ives commented in the score: " After the brass stops, the chimes sound on until they die away.....From the Steeples-the Bells!-then the Rocks on the Mountains begin to shout!"
It took sixty years for the composition to be heard when finally premiered at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in July, 1965 by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Lukas Foss.
