Filles a marier ne vous mariez (rondeau a4)Genre: Chanson
Pr. Instrument: Voice
This is one of the rare Binchois chansons that uses four voices rather than three. It's great, vigorous fun, without any earnest expressive intent, a work based on a popular tune of the day, and made purely for the entertainment of the singers themselves. If war were fun, it would sound like this; bagpipes, drums, and other brash instruments are right at home here. Simply: the initial melody for solo voice occurs twice. On the second repeat, all three of the other voices enter, in three steps, singing a highly imitative (or freely canonic) counterpoint. Contrapuntal clarity is not an aim here: the whole group mounts a short, effective assault on your droopy mood, a pink and tartan tank that runs right over gloom. It's worth getting the transcribed score out for singing with friends, if you're fun enough.
