This work comprises a collection of six airs with variations for keyboard. The quality of the airs is arrestingly expressive. The variations are usually figural, and the theme is often difficult to detect—often only its chords are recognizable as it is varied. Sometimes these works give the impression of walking in place without "going anywhere." In Pachelbel's magical atmosphere that is often sufficient.
