Sonata à 4 al Santo Sepolcro, for 2 violins, viola, and continuo in Eb, RV130Key: Eb
Year: 1728
Genre: Concerto
Pr. Instruments: Violin & Viola
Antonio Vivaldi's brief two-movement Sonata à 4 al Santo Sepolcro for two violins, viola, and basso continuo in E flat major, RV 130, is a companion piece for his two-movement Sinfonia al Santo Sepolcro in B minor for strings, RV 169. Both works were named for the Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, a hero of the first crusade. Fittingly, the Sonata is essentially a sonata de chiesa (church sonata) opening with a Largo molto with steady quarter note chords and slow imitative entrances for the instruments and closing with an Allegro, une poco with a repeated note theme set in a contrapuntal texture.
