Musicology:
As most listeners are aware, Niccolò Paganini was generally considered the greatest violin virtuoso of his day. He wrote much for his instrument and was among the few major composers to write for the combination of violin and guitar, as well as for the solo guitar, an instrument he also played with great proficiency. But what he wrote for the seemingly odd duo of violin and guitar was generally short: indeed, this Sonata in E minor lasts but a mere four minutes or so.

Sonata for Violin and Guitar in E-, Op.3, No.6, MS27/6Key: E-
Year: 1820
Genre: Chamber Sonata
Pr. Instruments: Violin & Guitar
- 1.Andante innocentemente
- 2.Allegro vivo e spiritoso
Consisting of just two movements, it opens with an Andante innocentemente, which features a lovely theme of singing, Italianate character. The violin holds center stage throughout this lovely panel, while the guitar is relegated to a mostly accompanimental role here and in the succeeding movement, providing rather straightforward rhythmic and harmonic support in both. The Allegro vivo finale is lively and festive, again exuding colors from the composer's native Italy. Here, the music brims with a sense of peasant celebration and joy. As always in the music of Paganini, the brilliant violin writing presents strong challenges to the soloist.
