Maria, gavotte for guitarYear: ca. 1880-1905
This is one of many original compositions for guitar by F.Tarrega, who has a large repertoire of original works as well as transcriptions.A gavotte is an old French dance usually written in common time and starts on the third beat of the bar.The time signature in this composition is 2/4 and it is in the key of A minor. The composition seems to be a little extravaganza of guitar techniques and effects. Perhaps Tarreas great virtuosistic qualities and his profound understanding of the guitar is quite evident in this piece.
The first 16 bars might be looked at as an introduction. It carries an enjoyable musical idea, beautifully phrased, with a great sense of joy and rhythm in it.Tarrega then tends to turn rather expressive and dramatic. In the last 16 bars, he builds up tension using a sequence of arpeggios, which he finishes up in pizzicato, seeking the most effective and impressive possible way to end his composition. His use of grace notes, harmonics, pizzicato and his unorthodox vision of the context, in which he has chosen to write for guitar(especially in this piece)all contributed to the creation of that polished, unique sound he gave to the instrument.
Like the majority of Tarrega's works, the date of this composition is not known.
