This work exists in two versions; the second has an added trumpet part. Based on a tune Rachmaninov presumably heard outside his Florence lodgings, the piece is light, humorous, and clearly meant as a "bon mot" rather than as anything to be taken seriously. It certainly belies Rachmaninov's rumored dourness.
