This is by far the more popular of Arnold's two horn concertos. A brass player himself, Arnold responded with enthusiasm to the opportunity to write a concerto for the great horn player Dennis Brain. In fact, Arnold decided to test the limits of horn technique, and actually surpassed them; he re-wrote portions of the solo part when Brain convinced him they were beyond anyone's technique. What Arnold retained in the score is difficult enough. The first movement is very athletic and extroverted. The second is in an opposite mood, a sustained tune like one of Satie's works named "Gymnopédies, " designed to require exquisite cantabile playing. The third movement, based on a three-note horn call that bounces between the soloist and all parts of the orchestra, is even more energetic than the opening movement. One of the best-known works in the horn concerto repertoire.
