Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream) was one of Oscar Strauss' myriad operettas in the popular Viennese style. Completed in 1907, it was composed to a libretto by Felix Dörmann and Leopold Jacobson, who in turn based their work on Hans Müller's Das Buch der Abenteuer. The stage version was revived on several occasions, and Strauss eventually adapted the score for The Smiling Lieutenant, a 1931 Hollywood film.

The good-natured plot is set in the typically nonsensical province of Flausenthurm, where the Princess Helene has just married Niki, a Hussar lieutenant. Unable to hold his attentions even through the day of their wedding, Helene enlists the improbable help of Franzi, an attractive female bandleader who has managed to lure away her new husband; Franzi teaches her how to use her charms and luxuries to her best advantage.
