Sonata in G, K.14, L.387Key: G
Year: 1738-39
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
This work initially appeared in the 1738 publication entitled Essercizi per gravicembalo, which contained the first 30 keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti. Some of the compositions in that volume likely predate the composer's departure from Italy for Spain in 1729, and this G major effort might well be in that group. Certainly, it does not display any obvious Spanish elements in its writing or sonorities. This is a technically demanding work, with an abundance of hand crossings and other challenging elements in the score. Marked Presto, the piece sparkles with exuberance and breathless excitement from the opening upward run. The catchy main theme is playful, and Scarlatti's often contrapuntal treatment of it keeps the mood kinetic and brightly lit. Beginning about midway through, the thematic development is rather minimal, resulting, nevertheless, in a slightly more muscular mode. Still, the notes are fleet and the atmosphere light and energetic throughout. This delightful and appealing sonata has a duration of three minutes.
