Sonata in A, K.39, L.391Key: A
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
This must have been a fairly popular sonata in its day, since part of it was orchestrated by Vincenzo Tommasini and used in his 1758 ballet Le donne di buon umore. It is easy to see why the music in this sonata might tempt another composer: it is busy with ideas, full of color and charm, even if it exhibits the influence of the composer's father Alessandro, as well as that of Pasquini. The sonata opens with a run up and down the keyboard, forming a lively, sort of arched, swirl that serves to ignite this cheerful piece. The music thereafter is driving and rhythmic, seeming to follow an ascending pattern, then playfully moving downward. The opening swirling figure periodically repeats, but the breathlessly busy music hardly needs to be goaded into animation. This sonata typically has a duration of three minutes.
