Sonata in G, K.105, L.204Key: G
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
This Sonata in G major was preserved in the 15th Venice volume of 1749, and thus probably dates to around the mid- or late 1740s, though it might have been written a bit earlier. It displays Spanish characteristics in its writing, the most obvious of which is the occasional strumming effect, used apparently to imitate a guitar. Yet there is also an Iberian flavor to its light and joyous manner and in its spirited trills. The Sonata is cast in the composer's usual binary form, but is symmetrical and exhibits Scarlatti's growing mastery of structure and in the economical expression of his ideas. Moreover, it is a fine example of his deftness at keyboard coloration.
This Sonata in G major opens with a jaunty but graceful theme whose trills and strumming in the second subject yield a delightful spice to the sun-filled and colorful sound world here. In the second half, where Scarlatti imaginatively develops his thematic material, the mood turns a bit more serious, though the playful character and joyous manner remain. Contrapuntal elements, though present periodically, are not a main ingredient in the work; rather, rhythmic drive and keyboard effects are more central to the writing. This Sonata typically lasts about five or six minutes.
