Musicology:
This is still a relatively early work, first published in 1749. Fairly light in mood, it features many acciaccaturas, and clearly exhibits the influence of Spanish folk music, especially in the trill-like swirling figures that appear throughout. Of course, as Scarlatti aficionados are generally aware, the composer spent most of his career in Spain and Portugal, and music from those Iberian cultures often filtered into his compositions. Marked Allegro, this spirited work has a 3/8 timing. It opens with a joyous lively theme, full of swirls and other playful colorations. Soon the swirls take on a Spanish flavor, and the music also turns a bit more muscular and rhythmic. As Spanish and rhythmic elements come to the fore, the composer exhibits his usual imaginative thematic transformations. This sonata typically has a duration of four minutes. -
