  • Sonata in A, K.405, L.43
    Key: A
    Genre: Sonata
    Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
This Sonata in A major was preserved in the ninth Venice volume, dating to 1754. It has been suggested that the 6/8 meter and dance character of the work are tied to the Spanish buleria or even to the tarantella. Whatever its inspiration, the Sonata is a lively piece of great color, divulging a Spanish influence in its driving spirit and in its series of repeated notes in the main line, notes that would sound quite at home on a guitar. But, of course, that instrument could not begin to fully capture the Sonata's plentiful counterpoint in the manner of a harpsichord or piano.

The work opens with a rapid theme whose stately busyness and subtle contrapuntal features are not far removed from much of the keyboard style of J.S. Bach. After the expository section is repeated, Scarlatti, as was his wont, launches into the thematic development of his material. The music here sheds some of its lightness in favor of a more serious character, though near the close of each of the two sections of the development, the music returns to the brighter, more joyous character of the opening. This Sonata typically lasts about three-and-a-half minutes.
