Sonata in C, K.502, L.3Key: C
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
While Scarlatti's keyboard sonata style evolved, becoming deeper and more sophisticated in both harmony and thematic development, it retained much from the refreshing expressive manner of his early works. One characteristic noticeable throughout his set of 555 keyboard sonatas is the sense of youthful spirit and energy. This C major effort, from the 12th Venice volume (1756) of the composer's keyboard works, brims with that sense, from the bouncy rhythms in the playful opening to the joyful elegance permeating the development section.
Marked Allegro, it opens with a chipper theme that bounces off of its many repeated notes with both a sunny effervescence and courtly elegance, all the while exuding colorful strains of Spanish festivity. In the second subject there are quieter, almost reflective moments, but the joyous, lively mood prevails throughout both expository sections. In the second half of the Sonata, Scarlatti develops his thematic material, starting off in a mood initially less festive, less jaunty and bright, but soon he returns to the bounce and sense of youthful spirit from the first half. This four-minute gem will have wide appeal not only to admirers of the composer but to keyboard enthusiasts in general.
