Sonata in F, K.525, L.188Key: F
Year: 1756-57
Genre: Sonata
Pr. Instrument: Harpsichord
Lasting just over two minutes, this Sonata in F major, one of Scarlatti's most popular, could also be one of his shortest. Ebullient throughout, the music incorporates elements of a lively Spanish dance called the buleria. This sonata offers one of the most effervescent and indefatigable themes encountered in any of Scarlatti's works. Marked Allegro, it seems to race along at an even faster tempo in its plentiful and imaginative contrapuntal activity. Some may hear a curious similarity to this theme and the one in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7! After Scarlatti presents the exposition a second time, the thematic material undergoes a transformation, but its character—especially thematically and rhythmically—exhibits much the same lively manner and festive mood. The music breathlessly speeds ahead right up to the end.
