This respected Brazilian composer is represented in the U.S. catalog only by this excerpt from a 1930 orchestral suite which concerns itself with Afro-Brazilian musical traditions; the excerpt is based on the batuque dance. This movement is the sort of piece that makes one want to hear more. It is virtually a rhythmic sparring match with unexpected shifts of accent, using original material rather than quoting actual folk music. It is brief, but vastly entertaining. This composer's name is sometimes listed incorrectly as "Fernandez."
