  • An die Sonne I ('Sinke, liebe Sonne'), D.270, Op. posth. 118, No.5
    Year: 1815
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
    Pr. Instrument: Voice

Gabriele von Baumberg was described by the Viennese as their Sappho and, whether or not that appellation is entirely justified, Schubert set more of her poetry than he did of any other woman's. Indeed, in the month of August 1815, Schubert set five of her poems, among them "An die Sonne" (To the Sun) (D. 270). A simple strophic setting in two verses, Schubert's song is nevertheless suffused with the fusion of intimacy and grandeur that only he could create. Set in E flat major and slow duple time, An die Sonne is at once an austere hymn to the sun and a sensual evocation of yearning for love.
