Cowell pioneered a number of techniques in piano music. The most notorious is tone clusters, groups of 3 or more adjacent notes played simultaneously on the keyboard using the palm or side or the hand or the forearm. He also introduced the idea of playing directly on the piano strings, as well as the use of mechanical mutes or plectra on the strings. He used these resources in his piano pieces. "Lilt of the Reel", written about 1928, has an unquestionably Gaelic quality both in its original modal melody and the rhythm of a Reel. The irregular meter is underscored by chromatic clusters that give it a peculiar piquancy. A short and lively piece.
