  • Jesu meine Freud und Lust, for alto, 2 violins, violetta, violone and continuo, BuxWV59
    Genre: Other Solo Vocal
    Pr. Instrument: Alto

This cantata sets a sacred Lied text by Angelus Silesius from a collection entitled Heilige Seelen-Lust, published in 1657. The text is devoted to Jesus and is quite florid and sweet in its expression of devotion. This type of devotional music was especially favored by the Pietists, a movement inside the Lutheran church that promoted a more tender sort of spirituality in response to the more academic nature of orthodox Lutheranism in the seventeenth century. Buxtehude's setting is scored for two violins, violetta, violone, alto, and continuo. For the most part the strings alternate with the alto, but the work concludes with an imitative amen section in which both the strings and the singer are all involved simultaneously.
