Jubilate Domino, omnis terra, for alto, viola da gamba and continuo, BuxWV64Year: c.1690
Genre: Other Solo Vocal
Pr. Instrument: Alto
This cantata sets Psalm 98:4-6. Buxtehude scored the work for solo viola da gamba, alto, and continuo. It is one of the most frequently performed of Buxtehude's cantatas, and is rather interesting due to its unusual instrumentation. The viola da gamba part is every bit as compelling as the alto part, and is probably more technically challenging. Most notable is the way that Buxtehude exploits the range of the gamba in this concerto, taking advantage of both the high and low registers of the gamba, often moving rapidly between them evidenced by many clef changes. The work is a true sacred concerto. Each new section of text receives a different musical treatment, and the work consists of a string of contrasting sections.
