Musicology:
This cantata sets Psalm 96:1-4 as well as the doxology which followed all psalms in the vespers service. Buxtehude scores the work for two sopranos, bass, and continuo. The work is set concerto style, with each singer having the opportunity to sing an extended solo passage. The work begins and ends with tutti sections in common time, and all of the solo passages are in 3/4 time. Buxtehude plays all sorts of games depicting the colorful text. For instance when the text speaks of God's power being greater than all the other gods, Buxtehude writes a very long melisma on the word "omnes." -
