Musicology:
This work is one of the so-called Little Preludes, keyboard works designed by Bach for pedagogical purposes. There are two sets of these pieces, the Little Preludes (6) (BWV 933-38) and the Little Preludes (12) (BWV 924-30, 939-42, and 999), both compilations not made by Bach, but assembled according to key and other features for reasons of convenience and study. This F major effort is the eighth in the Little Preludes (12) set and, at a half-minute or so, is the shortest of its members. That said, it is not short on brilliance or imagination. Like its siblings, it is quite simply constructed, with a vigorous main theme whose terse and repetitive manner exudes joy and a sense of celebration. Based on a broken chord, this theme (or motif) varies after its second appearance, but retains its rhythmic high spirits and festive sense. The running accompaniment brilliantly meshes with the almost manic character of the music. While most of the preludes in this set are technically easy, this exuberant one will provide a measure of challenge for the novice player. -
