For this cantata Buxtehude uses both a text from Paul's Epistle to the Romans 8:39, as well as an anonymous strophic poem. The work is scored for soprano, alto, bass, two violins, violone, and continuo. The work begins and ends with a setting of the Romans text sung by the full ensemble in common time. Sandwiched in the middle lie three verses of the strophic devotional Lied. The first verse of the Lied is sung solo by the soprano, the second by the alto, and the third by the soprano, alto, and bass. Each verse is separated by a brief setting of the Romans text in 3/4 time instead of the original common time. The repetition of the Romans text functions as a sort of ritornello. The work as a whole has a very tightly organized chiastic structure, ABCBCDA.
