In this cantata, Buxtehude sets the entirety of Psalm 110 as well as the Doxology that would be sung at Vespers. This particular Psalm was frequently sung at Vespers, and that is certainly one of the contexts in which this piece was originally performed. Like most Psalm settings the work is set in concerto style with many contrasting short sections, and frequent alternation between the strings and the singer. Buxtehude scores the work for either soprano or tenor, two violins, two violas, and basso continuo.
