  • Jesu dulcis memoria, for ATB voices, 2 violins and continuo, BuxWV57
    Genre: Other Choral
    Pr. Instrument: Chorus/Choir

In this cantata Buxtehude sets the very same Latin text known as the Jubilus Bernhardi, as in the cantata with the very same name BuxWV 56. This time however the entire cantata is built above 45 repetitions of a bass ostinato. The work is scored for alto, tenor, bass, and two violins. The piece is true chamber music, the violins and the singers each play an equal role in the polyphonic texture, and the strings never double the voices. The work is not altogether unlike the chaconnes from the sonatas.
