Prokofiev's return to the Soviet Union was actually gradual, occurring in the period 1934 - 1936, with the latter year the time he took up official residence in Moscow with his wife and sons. By 1935, however, the politically naïve composer had decided on resettling in his homeland from France, bringing on change that would impact his career and subsequent compositions. Beginning that year, to placate the always-demanding cultural ministers in the U.S.S.R., he began writing "mass songs," relatively simple works for the common people, on patriotic and propagandistic texts. He also wrote festive nationalistic works, like these four marches, which are largely free of political context.

The first here, "March for the Spartakiad" (or the Sports Games March) is probably the most popular. It is light and colorful, featuring a catchy main theme whose energy and playful character perfectly capture the competitive nature of sports. A contrasting theme suggests nonchalance in its mellowness. The all-wind scoring throughout is brilliant in its vivid colors and energy. The second march is the "Lyric March," a subdued and attractive piece that serves to offer contrast to the vigor of the opening number. The ensuing "Marching Song" is livelier and brighter, but still largely restrained. The concluding "Cavalry March" provides a rousing, colorful close to the set. Prokofiev wrote only a couple of other works for brass band, making this collection his most substantial contribution to the genre.
