Musicology (work in progress):
Baa Baa Black Sheep is a full three-act opera by English composer Michael Berkeley. The work was commissioned for the Cheltenham Festival in England and was first performed by Opera North at The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham on July 3, 1993. The libretto, based on Rudyard Kipling's Baa Baa Black Sheep and The Jungle Book, was written by David Malouf. Kipling's characters are complemented by the English comic figures of Punch and Judy and some truly terrifying adults. The opera is a children's tale, told from the perspective of a child, one who flees the fearful world of grownups into the fantastic world of animals found in Kipling's stories. These animals come to life taking on human attributes and characteristics. -
