Carissima, for small orchestraYear: 1913
Genre: Other Chamber
Pr. Instrument: Chamber Orchestra
Carissima ("Dearest girl") for small orchestra, written in 1914 was the first work that Elgar conducted for recording. Formally, it is a song, and in spite of its salon sweetness, it shows in many ways the later style of the composer. The initial theme is a melody easy to remember although tinged with melancholic nobility. The central section begins lightheartedly but grows unexpectedly intense before winding down to reintroduce the initial theme. The closing moments are solemn.
