    • 3.The Marksman

The three dances in this suite, "The Dance", "Lullaby" and "The

Marksmen", were written after Elgar and his wife returned from a holiday

in the Bavarian Alps. The pieces, especially lullaby, are quite unlike

Bavarian folk dances, and more closely resemble impressionistic

miniatures. The crack of the marksmen's guns (or maybe it's the slap

of palms on lederhosen!) can be heard in the third. All three movements

are light and engaging. There is another version for choir and piano,

with English words added, called "In the Bavarian Highlands".
