William Walton's Anniversary Fanfare was composed in 1973, for a commemorative concert observing the 75th anniversary of EMI. Similar in mood and scope to Walton's A Queen's Fanfare, which marked Queen Elizabeth's entrance to a state event in 1959, the Anniversary Fanfare is characterized by dotted figures, ornamental triplet grace notes, full-bodied chords, and dramatic dynamic swells. The piece is scored for nine trumpets, seven trombones, tympani, and percussion battery. It was composed specifically as a prelude to Walton's famous Orb and Sceptre March from 1953, and as such can be played before the march without any intervening pause.
