The brief Opus 147 Pastorale is a tiny gem in the wind output of Milhaud, scored for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. The form is that of a slightly extended prelude and fughetta, calm and gentle throughout, certainly pastoral and reflective in character. It exudes Milhaud's simple charm, and lacks any of his excursions into polytonality.
