Musicology (work in progress):
One of Hubert Parry's lasting influences was his relationship with Edward Dannreuther, an extraordinary pianist who became the composer's mentor and musical confidant. Dannreuther was well connected to the currents of German Romanticism; he was the founder the Wagner Society in London and even induced Wagner to conduct a series of concerts in that city in 1876. Parry, competent in the German language, became friendly with the Wagners during their visit to England.

Concertstück for orchestra in G-Key: G-
Year: 1877
- Andante ma non troppo
Parry's contact with Wagner proved influential upon his own music. Wagnerian overtones are certainly apparent in the Concertstück, although influences from Beethoven, Weber, and Liszt are also present. Clearly modeled after the styles of these (and perhaps other) composers, the Concertstück is nonetheless a fascinating effort. Parry marshalls his intense thematic ideas and avant-garde harmonic language with a Classical sense of order; one wonders how he might have influenced subsequent generations of English composers had he continued in this vein.
