Musicology:
This miniature is a setting of a poem of Ronsard. Written for voice and piano in 1923/4 and orchestrated in 1935, it is an ecstatic piece of almost incantatory quality, an effect enhanced by the orchestration, in which woodwinds and vibraphone play a substantial role. Ravel, with his typical irony, said that it was his favourite, explaining that he was able to play the piano part while holding a cigarette. -
