Musicology:
This was evidently a sketch for the great piano suite by Enrique Granados (1867 - 1916) called Goyescas. These piano pieces, full of Spanish flavor, are the composer's greatest works, together with an opera, also called Goyescas, which incorporates the piano pieces. As planned for publication, the piano suite Goyescas was to have six movements and appear in two volumes. (There was a seventh piece, El pelele, evidently written a couple of years after the rest, but in time to be included in the second volume as a kind of "extra.") Granados wrote this piece for inclusion in the suite, or perhaps as a draft or sketch for the project. Researchers eventually discovered it in the Granados Archive in Barcelona. There is no date; scholars generally agree it dates from 1909, when Granados started work on Goyescas. It is a relatively solemn-sounding dance in a slow-ish, three-beat time with frequent breaks in rhythm. -
