Written during a period of intense anguish and lack of self-confidence for the composer, the first string quartet is a lengthy chamber work, occupying forty-five minutes or more in performance. It is a complex and demanding piece with little melodic variety to leaven its intensely contrapuntal nature and for this reason it is little played outside Romania or music academies. Dedicated to the Flonzaley Quartet, who gave it its première in Bucharest in 1921, it moves from the serene to the ferocious via the nostalgic in swift succession, but is ultimately not a truly memorable work.
