Despite its late appearance chronologically in Enescu's catalog, the genesis of the second string quartet goes back to the period before World War One—a period in which the composer's confidence and self-esteem were at a particularly low ebb. Perhaps this explains why the music is governed largely by a spirit of restraint and a search for ascetic perfection, in rather the same manner as the second piano quartet. Dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, the first performance was given in Boston in 1953 by the Stradivarius Quartet.
