This, Tchaikovsky's first Andante cantabile movement (a more famous one occurs in his String Quartet No. 1), dates from a period when the composer claimed to be infatuated with the singer Désirée Artôt. Its main matter, naturally, is sweet and almost folklike, somewhat reminiscent of a Chopin nocturne. This gives way to a brief Allegro energico bouncing along on a bass ostinato. A short series of recitatives leads back to the nocturne, but the Allegro makes a final intrusion before the piece ends quietly with snatches of the Andante theme.
