Musicology (work in progress):
Carl Michael Ziehrer's operetta Ein tolles Mädel (The Crazy Girl) was an immensely popular work in pre-World War I Vienna; it opened first in Wiesbaden in 1907 and the first Viennese performance was not given until later that year. It had a remarkable, gender-bending story about a woman who had to live for 24 hours as a man, in an Army barracks, in order in win a wager. Ziehrer's musical style was at its zenith by the time this work rolled around, and several of the numbers therein became hits, such as "Küsse in Dunkeln" and "Gib acht!" -
