  • Symphony No.22 ('City of Light'), Op.236
    Year: 1970
    Genre: Symphony
    Pr. Instrument: Orchestra
    • 1.Allegro moderato
    • 2.Largo: Angel of Light
    • 3.Allegretto grazioso
    • 4.Finale: Largo maestoso
"City of Light" is an abstract, idealized city: "I was thinking of a million lights, an imaginary city, " says Hovhaness. He also added that the second movement, "Angel of Light, " is a memory of a childhood Christmas. The liner notes quote his Eastman School colleague Bernard Rogers: "Hovhaness comes from a small planet where it is always Christmas and where there are no bad sounds." This is Hovhaness in his exalted and meditative mood. A relatively strong work.
