Arvo Part's religious, meditative music has become exceptionally popular in this late part of the century. This work is awe-inspiring, virtually static, almost hypnotic in its harmonic slowness and ritualistic mood. It somehow sounds ages-old despite its use of the an arsenal of devices of modern harmony. This Passion is written for men's solo voices (including counter-tenor), soprano, violin, oboe, cello, bassoon, organ, and small chorus. Part achieves remarkably varied and inventively fresh sonorities with these small forces. The first recording of this composition became an instant classic among recent religious choral music.
