Musicology (work in progress):
This large and episodic work is precisely what its subtitle promises: A parade of American folk songs set for orchestra and chorus in a multi-movement, symphonic form. It may be subject to dispute as to whether it really should be called a "symphony," but it at least has the breadth and stature of a work in symphonic form. Among the movements we find settings of the Civil War tune "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," a lively reel built on "The Girl I Left Behind Me," and a radiant setting of that most lovely of American folk themes, "Shenandoah." In addition, there are a couple of purely orchestral sections. There is not much symphonic development, for Harris is content to let the songs speak (or, rather, sing) for themselves. But the orchestration and harmonization are always witty and accomplished, and the work as a whole is a very good listen. -
