In his poem "Afterglow," James Fenimore Cooper draws an analogy between the last glimpse of a sunset and the lingering memory of fleeting beauty. These find a parallel in the elusive and intractable yet lucid harmonies and figuration in the piano that Charls Ives uses to accompany the lyric melody of his 1919 setting. The vocal line provides just enough orientation to the blurred chord progressions to give them life and direction, while colorful dissonances lend the otherwise straightforward melody an intriguingly ambiguous character.
